Some fishes and sharks from Maastrichtian and Danian, Ciply, Belgium
Some recent trips in the ancient quarries around Ciply (near Mons) delivered some nice fishes and sharks teeth.
Pieces are discovered in the « Malogne conglomerate », phosphatic gravel usually quite hardened, and seated at the top of the “phosphatic chalk of Ciply” (Maastrichtian age) and just below the “tuffaceous chalk of Ciply”. (Danian age)
Where gravel-containing chalk has been altered by meteoric conditions, it can be sieved and give relatively easily isolated teeth. These are quite small but a real beauty, having a reddish hue not so common in our area.
Some teeth are more reworked, they can be dated of Maastrichtian age. Their root is usually a little worn and of reddish colour. Danian teeth are more fresh, and their root is rather yellowish.
Most usually found fish species are :
Bony fishes : Enchodus sp. cf. faujasi, Pycnodus sp., and a lot of undetermined vertebrae.
Sharks : Cretolamna appendiculata, Corax kaupi, Pseudocorax affinis, Carcharias sp.
